Hyundai takes 2,4% European market share in 2009
and aims for further growth

Offenbach, 19th January 2010

In December Hyundai once again exceeded the trend of the European new-car market, recording a sales increase of 27,4% (to 23.787 units) compared to the same month in 2008, while the market grew by 16%. The figures, published by ACEA, move Hyundai’s total sales for 2009 to 341.837 units – equivalent to growth of 26,6% over the previous year – in a market which fell by 1,6%.

Surpassing the industry trend by such a margin lifted the company’s market share in Europe to 2,4% (January to December), which represents a significant rise from the 1,8% achieved in 2008.

The Hyundai sales charge was led by the i-range, which proved particularly popular with consumers taking advantage of the ‘scrappage schemes’ operated around Europe. The i10 (up 86%) and i30 (up 56%) both saw considerable increases compared to 2008, and over 59.000 examples of the i20 were sold, taking Hyundai B-segment sales up by 30%.

Allan Rushforth, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Europe:
“In 2009, despite the challenging economic conditions, Hyundai pushed ahead with aggressive promotional activity to increase market share in Europe. Many customers consequently visited Hyundai showrooms for the first time, attracted by the highly-desirable model range.

“Conditions will undoubtedly remain tough for the automotive industry in 2010, but a product renaissance will drive us towards our goal of maintaining and then building on last year’s success. When the all-new ix35 goes on sale this quarter, it will further our reputation as a pioneer in the SUV segment, with its stunning styling and super-efficient powertrains. Later in the year we will begin our busiest-ever period of vehicle launches, with 10 new models and derivatives coming to market in just 13 months, including several which will join segments new to Hyundai. Together with a continued focus on innovative marketing, these new arrivals give us confidence that our objectives will be fulfilled.”
